Applying for a Marriage Certificate in Queensland
A practical guide to the difference between ceremonial and official marriage certificates, and how Gold Coast couples get the official certificate in Queensland.
After your marriage ceremony, the certificate question is usually simple:
- the certificate you receive on the day is usually a ceremonial certificate
- the certificate you use for legal proof, name changes, passports, and other official purposes is the official marriage certificate
In Queensland, that official certificate is ordered through Queensland Births, Deaths and Marriages.
The two types of certificate couples usually mean
Ceremonial certificate
This is the keepsake certificate you normally receive on the day of the marriage.
- it is meaningful
- it is a nice record of the day
- it is not the official government certificate used for legal proof
Official marriage certificate
This is the certificate issued through Queensland Births, Deaths and Marriages after the marriage has been registered.
This is the certificate usually needed for:
- passport updates
- formal name changes with institutions
- visa or legal processes
- other identity-related administration
When can you order it?
You can only order the official certificate once the marriage has been registered.
That means:
- the ceremony happens first
- the celebrant lodges the official paperwork afterwards
- Queensland BDM completes the registration
- then you order the official certificate
