Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

ID Requirements

A plain-English guide to the documents usually needed to get married in Australia.

To get married in Australia, you usually need documents that show:

  • your date and place of birth
  • your identity
  • that any previous marriage has ended, if relevant

Date and place of birth

This is usually shown with:

  • a birth certificate, or
  • a passport

Identity

Identity is usually shown with photo ID such as:

  • a driver licence
  • a passport
  • a proof of age card
  • another government-issued photo ID

If you were previously married

You will usually need:

  • a divorce order, or
  • the death certificate of your former spouse

If your name has changed

If your documents do not all match, you may also need evidence of the name change.

If your documents are not in English

You will usually need:

  • the original document
  • an official translation

The safest option is usually a NAATI-certified translation.

Originals or certified copies

Bring original documents where possible. If you are using copies, they should be properly certified.
