Shortening of Time for Marriage in Queensland
A guide to the limited circumstances where the usual one month notice period may be shortened.
A shortening of time is the legal process for marrying in less than the ordinary one calendar month after the NOIM is given.
Important point
It is not automatic.
You still need to:
- give the NOIM
- fit one of the recognised legal categories
- provide evidence
- get approval from a prescribed authority
The recognised categories
The categories in the Marriage Regulations are:
- employment-related or other travel commitments
- wedding or celebration arrangements
- medical reasons
- legal proceedings
- error in giving notice
What usually matters
Approval usually turns on:
- whether your situation genuinely fits a category
- whether your evidence is strong
- whether there is a sensible explanation for why notice was not given sooner
