Overseas Marriages and Australia
How overseas marriages are generally recognised in Australia and what to know about documents.
If you were legally married overseas, that marriage is generally recognised in Australia if:
- it was a valid marriage in the overseas country, and
- it would also have been a valid marriage in Australia
Do you register it in Australia?
No. Overseas marriages cannot be registered in Australia.
What document proves it?
Your overseas marriage certificate is usually the main proof of the marriage.
If it is not in English, you will usually need an official translation.
Important note about name changes
Official guidance says some states and territories do not accept overseas marriage certificates if you want to change your name. Check the exact rules of the agency or registry you are dealing with.
