International Couples Getting Married on the Gold Coast

A guide for overseas residents, visa holders, and international couples planning a legal marriage on the Gold Coast.

You do not need to be an Australian citizen or Queensland resident to get married on the Gold Coast.

International couples can legally marry in Australia if they meet the ordinary legal requirements.

Who this page is for

This guide is useful if one or both of you are:

  • living overseas
  • travelling to Australia to marry
  • on a temporary visa
  • on a tourist visa
  • planning a later move, visa process, or overseas celebration

International couples still need:

  • a NOIM lodged at least one calendar month before the ceremony
  • identity and birth documents
  • proof ending any previous marriage if relevant
  • translations for documents not in English
  • two witnesses aged 18 or over

Can we lodge the NOIM from overseas?

Usually, yes.

The NOIM can often be signed overseas before an authorised witness such as:

  • an Australian diplomatic officer
  • an Australian consular officer
  • a notary public
  • another authorised person under the Marriage Act

Some celebrants can also lawfully assist with remote NOIM witnessing in the circumstances now allowed by law.

Do we need to be in Australia for the one month notice period?

No. The ordinary issue is not where you are during the month. The key issue is that the NOIM is properly lodged and the legal notice period has passed before the ceremony.

But for the ceremony itself, you must be physically present in Australia.

Translation requirements

If your documents are not in English, you will usually need:

  • the original documents
  • official translations

See Translation Requirements for more detail.

Visa reminder

Marriage itself does not automatically grant visa rights or residency. If immigration status matters to you, get visa advice separately and do not assume the marriage process and immigration process are the same thing.
